Art History

Emblematic of the late nineteenth-century Aesthetic movement and considered joyful and life-affirming by the Impressionists, the golden sunflower with its radiant petals is featured in works of art throughout the Metropolitan Museum.

Our glittering necklace is based on a sunflower (Helianthus annuus) depicted on a trade card in the Burdick Collection at the Museum. The finest collection of American trade cards in the United States, it was amassed by Jefferson R. Burdick (American, 1900–1963), who began collecting American ephemera when he was ten years old. The “Flowers” series was issued by Goodwin & Company in 1890 to promote Old Judge Cigarettes; the Museum owns all 50 cards in this series. 24K gold overlay, hand enameled, made with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Made in the USA. Hook-and-eye closure. 19”L.
