The original altar cross from which this bookmark is based was made in Spain during the twelfth century.
This bookmark is adapted from the reverse side of an altar cross of copper gilt and champlevé enamel and now in the Museum’s collection. In the center medallion of the cross is an image of the Lamb of God, flanked by the Greek letters alpha and omega, signifying the beginning and the end. The arms of the cross are decorated with a foliate scroll design. Gold-plated brass. 12”L including ribbon.
