Art History

Feminine and sophisticated, the pin-pendant with chain in the Museum’s collection upon which our pendant is based, is representative of fine jewelry made during the first decade of the twentieth century, which often featured “all-white” platinum and diamonds for a lacy, delicate appearance.

A lavish pin-pendant with chain in the Museum’s collection was produced in New York City about 1905–15. This versatile adornment showcases a large, oval ruby surrounded by glittering diamonds. The detachable pendant can be worn alone as a pin, or it can hang from the chain, embellished with a tassel set with more diamonds. An American heiress known for her generosity to the Metropolitan Museum (and other cultural institutions) was the original owner of this luxurious piece; its elegance and bejeweled glamour would have complemented the period’s unstructured fashions. Our enchanting earrings are based on the original’s glittering design. Imitation rhodium overlay, hand enameled, with Czech crystals. Imported. 2 1/2”L. Pierced, with sterling silver wires.
