Description

Various

Since at least ancient Egypt, domestic cats have served a variety of functions from companionship to pest control; they have been worshiped as idols and vilified as witches. Throughout their long history, cats have been favorite subjects for artists throughout the world. They are figures in oil paintings by both great masters and unknown artists, in prints, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, and textiles. While their general behavior and spirit have remained a constant, the eyes of individual artists and the demands of different traditions and mediums have created a diverse, and often entertaining, variety of representations.

Playful and mischievous, independent and haughty, felines have fascinated artists for centuries. Exemplifying a variety of pieces in which cats are the central figure, three works of art in the Metropolitan Museum’s diverse collection have been reproduced on these bookmarks. The long-haired Little Grey Cat by Elizabeth Norton (American, 1887–1985) sits patiently, ignoring the bowls of cream set out below while gazing at the birds above. The portrait of The Favorite Cat by Nathaniel Currier (American, 1813–1888) captures the personality of this handsome tabby. The curious Cat Watching a Spider by Oide Toko (Japanese, 1841–1905) wears a colorfully patterned neckerchief. Our bookmarks are designed to fold over the page for a firm hold. Set of 3 bookmarks. Lacquered metal, with magnetic snap closure. 1 2/3” x 3 1/2” each.
