Art History

Edgar Simpson

Edgar Simpson (British, 1867–1945), who established a jewelry shop in Nottingham, was associated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the celebrated Glasgow designer, and he exhibited some of his work at the 1902 Vienna Secession exhibit. Extant pieces by Simpson include curvaceous necklaces, repoussé copper panels, goblets, and brooches.

Description

Among the Museum’s holdings is a rare album created about 1899–1900 by jeweler Edgar Simpson (British, 1867–1945). Bound in tooled and gilded leather, it contains 34 pages of original designs in the Art Nouveau style. With their sinuous, plantlike forms, Simpson’s imaginative sketches for brooches, pendants, and other adornments display the essence of this influential decorative style, which grew out of the Arts and Crafts and the Aesthetic movements and reached its apogee about 1900. Our irresistible earrings are based on a delicate design in this album. 24K gold overlay, with lapis. Imported. 1 1/4”L. Pierced, with gold-filled wires.
