Among the European elite of the eighteenth century, Paris and the French court were considered the pinnacle of fashion and luxury. Even mens basic costume of the perioda coat, breeches, and waistcoat (vest)was elaborately embellished for court and formal occasions. In 1700, the waistcoat fell almost to the knees, but it became shorter over time so that it skimmed the waist by centurys end.
A splendid French waistcoat in the Museums collection was made about 177080. Extravagantly embroidered with flowers and foliage, this sumptuous garment is the source for our beautifully ornamented jacket. Polyester, with contrast lining and embroidered buttons. Shaped neckline, with long sleeves. Dry clean only. Imported.
