Description

In the Museum’s collection is a triptych, painted in oil on wood, which was created about 1575–80 by an anonymous northern German artist. The seven family members depicted are unidentified, but they likely hailed from Hamburg, the city whose church spires are shown on the orb in Christ’s hand. The verses from the Psalms and the Gospel of John inscribed on the tablets above the figures are in Low German, the vernacular of Hamburg and much of northern Germany. These verses were taken verbatim from a Low German edition of Martin Luther’s Bible translation. The unusual presence of Christ in the midst of this intimate domestic gathering bespeaks a deeply Lutheran understanding of Christ’s direct accessibility to believers. Our lovely cross design has been adapted from the cross on the orb that Christ holds in his hand. 18K gold overlay. Imported. Lobster claw closure. Adjusts from 18”L to 20”L with extender chain; cross: 1 1/4”L.
