Egyptain

Ancient Egyptian craftsmen were fortunate to have access to a wide array of materials that were used in jewelry making. Gold, silver, and semiprecious stones such as turquoise, carnelian, and amethyst were mined in Egypt and Sinai. The only commonly used gemstone that had to be imported was lapis lazuli, which originated in Afghanistan and traveled along trade routes through the ancient Near East to Egypt.

 

Description

A section of an ancient Egyptian necklace in the Museum’s collection (Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 12, ca. 1878–1840 B.C.) features colorful cylindrical beads made of gold, lapis lazuli, and turquoise. This provides the basis for our striking bangles. Includes 3 matching bangles. 18K gold overlay, with reconstituted turquoise and reconstituted lapis. Imported. 3” diam.; inner circumference: 8”.
