The Russian-born Sonia Delaunay (French, 18851979) was the wife of the artist Robert Delaunay. Although not painted until 1959, Colored Rhythm epitomizes a mode of abstraction she and her husband developed in the mid-1910s, which was dubbed Orphism by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Using bold colors and simple geometric formscircle, square, rectangle, and triangleshe imaginatively suggests different depths of plane and an exciting sense of movement.
