Poet, political activist, architect, and designer, William Morris (British, 18341896) ranks among the most influential figures of the Victorian era. In 1861, Morris co- founded the successful firm later known as Morris & Co. The companys enduringly popular designs for wallpaper, stained glass, furniture, and fabric reflect Morriss own interests in medieval art and the close study of nature, and were often densely patterned with flowers, leaves, and fruit.
In 1861, William Morris (British, 18341896) co-founded a London interior design firm (reorganized in 1875 as Morris & Co.) to design and produce a full range of household goods. Morris was a prolific designer of wallpapers and fabrics. Our flower-bedecked scarf was adapted from two original Morris & Co. designs in the Museums collection. The scarfs central motif comes from Violet and Columbine (wool textile, 1883), while the border is taken from Pink and Rose (woodblock-printed wallpaper, ca. 1890). Silk crêpe de chine.
